Yankees Game 143: Errors looms over Mitchell, Yankees in loss
Dropped catch by Aaron Judge leads to three-run second inning to lead the New York Yankees to their second loss in a row.
Los Angeles Dodgers 8 – New York Yankees 2
With the winning streak snapped, the Yankees start an interleague series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the first inning, Bryan Mitchell was greeted with a pair of singles by Chase Utley and Corey Seager. With one out and runners on the corners, Adrian Gonzalez beat out a double play as Utley scored to put the Dodgers ahead early.
In the second inning, Howie Kendrick and Andrew Toles got on base with two outs then a strange dropped catch error by Aaron Judge in right field allowed two runs to score while Chase Utley reached third on the three-base error. The error continued to be costly when Corey Seager brought Utley home with a single that put the Dodgers ahead by four.
Starlin Castro got the Yankees on the scoreboard in the second inning when he hit a solo home run off of Jose De Leon into the second deck of left field. The Dodgers struck for one more run against Mitchell in the third inning. Howie Kendrick brought home Yasmani Grandal to put the Dodgers ahead by four and knocked Mitchell out of the game. Chasen Shreve came on in relief but a second lapse of defense by the Yankees cost them a run. Kendrick stole second base and on a throwing error by Gary Sanchez, Josh Reddick scored from third to make it 6-1 in favor of the Dodgers.
In just 2 1/3 innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed six runs, two earned, on eight hits. He walked none and struck out two.
In the fifth inning, Aaron Judge got ahead of the count and deposited a 2-0 fastball into the left field bleachers for a solo home run, the second run for the Yankees.
After Shreve cleaned up the remainder of the third inning, Richard Bleier provided much needed relief when he pitched four no-hit innings while striking out three. James Pazos came in to pitch but pinch-hitter Yasiel Puig went the other way for a solo home run in the eighth inning. Justin Turner took Ben Heller deep to right field in the ninth inning too as the Dodgers dominated to the expense of the Yankees in tonight's loss.
