Yankees Game 155: Scoreless streak snapped, losing streak lives
Despite snapping the scoreless streak at 34 innings, the New York Yankees cannot hold the lead and lose in walk-off fashion.
New York Yankees 3 – Toronto Blue Jays 4 With two shutouts to recover from, the Yankees continued their four-game series in Toronto. After a scoreless first inning, the Yankees appeared to threaten their scoreless skid in the second inning. With one out, Mark Teixeira got on base with a double to right. Brian McCann walked and Chase Headley dropped a single into left field that loaded the bases. Estrada buckled down and got Mason Williams to strikeout before Ronald Torreyes popped out to strand the bases loaded. Michael Pineda looked to deny the potent Blue Jays lineup and he was successful until the fourth inning. With one out, Jose Bautista went deep to left for a solo home run to put the Blue Jays on the board. In the sixth inning, Pineda began the inning with a walk of Devon Travis. A double play seemed to calm the inning but a single by Edwin Encarnacion and two passed balls moved him to third base. Jose Bautista was walked and that cued the end of Pineda's day on the mound. Adam Warren generated a ground out from Russell Martin to end the inning and Pineda's pitching line. In 5 2/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on three hits. He walked three and struck out seven.
With two shutouts and six scoreless innings into this game, the Yankees were approaching a record they did not want but the Yankees shortstop reset the dreaded counter. Didi Gregorius opened the seventh inning with a solo home run, tying the game and putting the Yankees first run on the scoreboard in 34 innings. After a scoreless seventh inning by Warren, Dellin Betances was called upon for the eighth inning. Betances began the inning with a walk of Josh Donaldson. Gaining a reputation for his inability to hold runners, Donaldson stole second base on Betances. After a ground out advanced Donaldson to third, Jose Bautista got the Yankees once again with a single hat put the Blue Jays back ahead. Against closer Roberto Osuna in the ninth inning, Mark Teixeira led off with a single. Billy Butler followed with a single of his own. A ground out by Chase Headley put two in scoring position and Mason Williams came through with a single that tied the game. Ronald Torreyes put the Yankees ahead on a sacrifice fly and the Yankees appeared to be set for a win. Betances returned for the ninth inning but gave up a leadoff walk to Melvin Upton Jr. and since he continues to have a difficult time holding runners on, Tyler Clippard was called on for the save. Kevin Pillar put runners on the corners with a single and Ezequiel Carrera tied the game on a safety squeeze play. On the bunt, Clippard's errant throw allowed Pillar and Carrera to advance into scoring position. Travis struck out for the first out. After an intentional walk of Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion walked off with a single just out of the reach of a diving Torreyes at second base.
