Mark Trumbo led off with a double and after a walk of Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop advanced them into scoring position with two outs. Michael Bourn came through with a two-out single that scored two and put the Orioles ahead early. In the third inning, Manny Machado came up with a two-out solo home run to right field that extended the Orioles lead to three. With two outs and one on in the fourth inning, Luis Severino was taken from the game and Jonathan Holder finished off the inning. In 3 2/3 innings, Luis Severino allowed three runs on five hits. The Yankees were held silent by Wade Miley through the first four innings. Mark Teixeira led off with a single. A walk of Chase Headley put two on base with no outs. A force out at third put runners on first and second but Tyler Austin brought the Yankees within two on a single to left field. In the sixth inning, the Yankees came to life with two outs. Billy Butler and Rob Refsnyder got on base with a pair of singles and Chase Headley lined a double into the left field corner to score Butler to bring the Yankees within one.
In the seventh inning, Tyler Austin made it three consecutive scoring innings with a lead off home run to right-center, tying the game 3-3. Following the 3 2/3 innings by Severino, Jonathan Holder, Richard Bleier, Kirby Yates and Tyler Clippard pitched 4 1/3 scoreless to let the Yankees come back to tie the game. In the eighth inning, the Yankees took the lead. Brad Brach came on in the eighth inning but started the inning with a walk of Jacoby Ellsbury. Chase Headley hit a line drive double down the right field line to put two in scoring position. Austin Romine broke the 3-3 tie on a single to left field that scored two. Then with two outs and Oliver Drake pitching, Brett Gardner hit a two-run double to left field that extend the Yankees lead to four.
After difficult outings lately, Dellin Betances got the call in the non-save ninth inning. After Michael Bourn reached on an infield single, Betances returned to dominant form by striking out J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones and Pedro Alvarez, all swinging to shut down tonight's win.
