Yankees Game 41: Beltran triples doubles in CC Sabathia's return, win streak at 3
CC Sabathia returns with 6 strong innings. Backed by three doubles by Carlos Beltran, the Yankees are on a three-game winning streak.
New York Yankees 8 – Oakland Athletics 3
The Yankees looked to keep the good times going in the Bay Area with the return of CC Sabathia.
After falling short of scoring in the first inning when Mark Teixeira flew out to left field with two on against Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia pitched a scoreless first inning. In the second inning, CC Sabathia painted himself into a corner when he walked Billy Butler and hit Stephen Vogt with a pitch. With two outs, designated hitter Matt McBride hit a double to left field, putting the A's ahead by one.
After being held off the board, despite five Yankees reaching base in three innings against Sonny Gray, the defense let their number one starter down.
After getting the first out of the fourth inning, Gray walked Aaron Hicks before Didi Gregorius hit a single. On a deep fly ball to center field by Ronald Torreyes, Coco Crisp missed the fly ball and Torreyes sprinted around the bases for a two-run triple. After a vintage catcher's interference by Jacoby Ellsbury, a wild pitch scored Torreyes and put Ellsbury at second. Brett Gardner walked and another wild pitch put Ellsbury on third.
Carlos Beltran came through with his second double of the game also over the head of Crisp for two runs and the hook on Sonny Gray's short night with a five-run fourth inning.
The defense made CC Sabathia's third inning difficult but he worked around an error by Torreyes to retire three of the four batters to come up in the inning. Including the last two of the third inning, Sabathia retired nine of the last 10 he faced in his first start off the disabled list.
In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed one run on three hits while walking one and striking out eight.
Against reliever Ryan Dull, the Yankees got the third double from Carlos Beltran scoring Brett Gardner and extending their lead to five. Reliever Kirby Yates allowed a run in the seventh inning but the offense came to life one more time in the ninth inning. With two outs, Didi Gregorius and Ronald Torreyes reached with a pair of singles and Jacoby Ellsbury got his second hit of the night with a two-run triple, giving the Yankees eight runs tonight.
The A's managed to score against Chasen Shreve in the ninth inning but it meant little as the Yankees won their third straight game tonight.
For CC Sabathia, this was his 100th win as a New York Yankee.
