Yankees Game 8: Pair of Blue Jays bombs beat Eovaldi
Nathan Eovaldi only made 2 mistakes but they were hit a long way in tonight's loss.
New York Yankees 2 – Toronto Blue Jays 4
In tonight's rubber match, one swing turned the tide against the Yankees.
Through the first three innings, Nathan Eovaldi and Marcus Stroman were locked in a pitcher's duel. In the fourth inning, Marcus Stroman blinked first and it started with a simple grazing hit by pitch of Alex Rodriguez. With one on and one out, Mark Teixeira hit a single and Brian McCann reached on an infield single to load the bases. On a ground ball to second, Carlos Beltran turned back the clock and hustled to prevent the double play, bringing in the Yankees' first run of the game. A wild pitch added a second run for the Yankees and Nathan Eovaldi to work with.
After working around a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, Eovaldi ran into trouble he could not do anything about in the fifth inning.
Bewteen the first two outs of the inning, Eovaldi walked a runner. A double by Kevin Pillar put the potential tying run in scoring position but the go-ahead run at the plate, Josh Donaldson, thought to just take the lead. On a no-doubt moonshot to center field, Josh Donaldson turned the two-run lead for the Yankees into a one-run deficit with a three-run home run.
After a quick top of the inning, Nathan Eovaldi surrendered a solo home run to Troy Tulowitzki, putting the Yankees behind by two. In 6 2/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out eight. Eovaldi is the second Yankees pitcher to get into the seventh inning this year. Johnny Barbato followed Eovaldi with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief as he continues making a positive impression with his taste of the majors.
After eight innings of two-run baseball by Marcus Stroman, aided by nine outs quickly collected after the Blue Jays received the lead, closer Roberto Osuna took over in the ninth inning. Osuna set the Yankees down in order as they were only able to muster three hits against Stroman, losing the game and this series.
Win – Marcus Stroman (2-0)
Loss – Nathan Eovaldi (0-1)
Save – Roberto Osuna (4)
