Yankees game 9: Bullpen struggles in loss
Nathan Eovaldi gets through five but the bullpen loses it in one inning.
New York Yankees 5 -- Baltimore Orioles 7
The Yankees rally would fall short on an annually celebrated day, Jackie Robinson Day.
With the number 42 worn throughout the league, the Yankees wrapped up their series with the Baltimore Orioles. In the bottom of the first inning, Nathan Eovaldi would give up a pair of singles and with two outs, Chris Davis hit a single to right field to put the Orioles ahead by one early.
In the third inning, Bud Norris would get the first two outs but Jacoby Ellsbury would hit a double to center field. Chase Headley would walk to put two on and Carlos Beltran would hit a deep double to right-center field, missing a home run by inches. The double would score two runs and put the Yankees ahead.
In the fourth inning, Alex Rodriguez would hit a solo home run to deep left-center field. His second home run of the season gave the Yankees a two-run lead. The man that once looked up to Rodriguez, Manny Machado, would respond with a home run of his own in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
In the fifth and final inning for Eovaldi, Manny Machado would walk with two outs. Caleb Joseph hit a single and advanced to second on a poor throw as the potential go-ahead run. David Lough would strike out to end the inning. In five innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out nine.
David Carpenter came in for the sixth inning and Jonathan Schoop would take away Eovaldi’s chance at a win. Schoop would open the sixth inning with a solo home run, his third of the season. Alejandro De Aza followed with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Adam Jones would be walked intentionally and Justin Wilson came in. Delmon Young hit a pinch-hit single to left field and the Orioles took the lead. Chris Davis would beat the matchup and hit a two-run double off the left-handed Wilson. Chris Martin would come in and get the second out but Caleb Joseph would bring in one more run with a single to center field.
In a deflating sixth inning, the Orioles sent nine batters to the plate and got five hits, scoring five runs against three Yankees relievers.
In the eighth inning, Chase Headley hit a leadoff single against Tommy Hunter. With one out, Mark Teixeira hit a double to right field to put two runners in scoring position. Brian McCann would pull the Yankees within three with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, in what could have been more had Jones not made a great grab. A wild pitch would bring in the Yankees second run of the inning but Alex Rodriguez would be called out on strikes to end the rally.
The Yankees would get the potential tying run on the bases but Chase Headley would ground out to end the game.
