Cincinnati Reds 1 -- New York Yankees 7
Brandon McCarthy allows one run over six innings in his home debut as a New York Yankee.
Brandon McCarthy made his Yankee Stadium debut as a member of the New York Yankees and started with four scoreless innings, including five strikeouts. The offense would support him in his efforts and it started in the second inning. With two outs, Carlos Beltran would hit a hanging breaking ball from Cincinnati Reds' starter Alfredo Simon. The 10th home run for Beltran was a solo home run into right field.
A third inning error by right fielder Jay Bruce would come back to haunt Simon and the Reds. Brett Gardner would bring home Brian Roberts, the beneficiary of the right field error, with a single through the drawn in infield. In the fifth inning, McCarthy would lose his shutout when left fielder Chris Heisey took an 0-1 pitch into left field. The solo home run by Heisey made it a 2-1 ballgame.
But the Yankees would bounce back for McCarthy and provided some cushion for their recently acquired righty.
In Simon's last inning of work, Brian Roberts and Kelly Johnson would start with a pair of singles. A wild pitch would put the two runners in scoring position and Brett Gardner would hit a deep fly ball to right field that would not go for a hit but it was deep enough to score a run on the sacrifice fly. Derek Jeter would follow with a single to score Johnson and the Yankees made it a 4-1 game.
Over five innings, All-Star Alfredo Simon allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out four.
Brandon McCarthy would continue dealing as he finished strong. In the sixth, and last, inning of his day, McCarthy allowed a pair of singles but he mixed them up with his three last strikeouts of the game. Over six innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed one run on six hits while walking none and striking out nine. A very good outing by the righty.
Against reliever J.J. Hoover, Brian McCann would start the sixth inning with a shift defying, slow roller down the third base line that even the slow-footed McCann successfully reached base on. Carlos Beltran would hit through the shift with a single of his own. With one out, Brian Roberts would load the bases with a single of his own. Kelly Johnson would get a piece of the runs when he hit a single to score two runs and put runners on the corners. Like the fifth inning, Brett Gardner would productively hit a sacrifice fly and scored the seventh and last run of the game.
Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley and Matt Thornton combined for the final three innings of the game and the Yankees would complete the second win since the beginning of the second half of the season.
Win - Brandon McCarthy (4-10)
Loss - Alfredo Simon (12-4)
