The Yankees have made their first significant position player deal, they have just acquired third baseman Chase Headley from the San Diego Padres. In return the Padres will get the struggling Yangervis Solarte and minor league right-handed prospect Rafael De Paula. The Padres will also pay $1 million dollars of Headley's remaining $10.5 million dollar contract. Headley is strictly a defensive upgrade for the Yankees, who have had a hard time finding consistency there this year. Headley is batting .229/.296/.355 with 7HR and 32RBI on the year.
On the other hand we bid farewell to Solarte once again, he was great spark for the team in April and May but has since fizzled out. Quick note Headley will be a free agent after this year, so he will just a rental player most likely. This deal was first reported by YES Network's Jack Curry.
The Yankees have acquired 3B Chase Headley and cash from the Padres in exchange for INF Yangervis Solarte and RHP Rafael De Paula.
