On Tuesday afternoon, the New York Yankees announced that they have called up RHP Anthony Swarzak from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To create space on the roster for Swarzak, the team optioned reliever Luis Cessa to Triple-A, and designated LHP Tyler Olson for assignment.

Swarzak will get his first opportunity with the Yankees big league club this season. The 30-year-old was signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp this offseason, but did not make the initial 25-man roster to start the season. In 15 games in Triple-A, Swarzak posted a 1-4 record with a 3.86 ERA, spending time as both a starter and a reliever. With this move, the Yankees are most likely looking to get Luis Cessa more regular work on the mound. The 24-year-old has not pitched for the big league club since he threw four innings in relief on May 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays. In a small sample size of work, Cessa has been pretty impressive, and it looks like the Yankees want to keep him sharp in case they need him to fill a more prominent role on the big league roster in the future. To create room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees chose to designate Olson for assignment. The 26-year-old was with the big league club for a short time earlier this season, but has been pitching at the Triple-A for the majority of the season. In 11 appearances (three starts), the lefty is 1-2 with a 5.27 ERA.
