Yankees outhit Pirates but fall, 6-3
The Yankees opened up their series against the Pirates on Friday night in Pittsburgh. Despite CC Sabathia's stellar first three starts of the season, he allowed four earned runs in a losing effort. Sabathia had only allowed three earned runs all season long, but Friday night was a different story as Pittsburgh put up four runs on the big lefthander during their first time through the order. CC's pitches lacked life – he allowed two home runs on fastballs that only peaked at 87 MPH. In his first three starts, he averaged 92-93 MPH with the fastball. Sabathia’s night came to an end after the fifth inning, allowing four earned runs, seven hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Pirates starting pitcher, Tyler Glasnow, didn’t fair much better than his counterpart. Glasnow went 4.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and struck out five. The damage happened early with two big bangs off the bats of Jordy Mercer and Josh Bell in the first and second innings respectively. Bell’s two-run shot gave the Pirates an early 4-0 lead on top of Mercer’s solo blast. The Yankees only scored one legitimate run all game – the rest were because of errors. Pittsburgh finished with three errors on the night but still managed to escape with a victory.

The Yankees had a costly error of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning as Starlin Castro dropped a routine popup to second base, which allowed Jordy Mercer to score.
Notes
Jacoby Ellsbury was a bright spot for the Yankees going 3-4 on the night with one run scored. Ellsbury raised his average to .333 on the year and has been one the Yankees more consistent hitters. Michael Pineda is on the mound for the Yankees today and going up against Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon. The Yankees now sit 1 ½ games out of first place at 10-6.
