Yankees place Gleyber Torres on 10-day DL with right hip strain
Updated Post: July 4, 4:54 p.m. -- Gleyber Torres has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right hip strain, according to multiple reports.
Original Post: July 4, 4:26 p.m. -- Gleyber Torres is making the Yankees bite their nails for the first time this season.
The 21-year-old second baseman, who's emerged as a legitimate American League Rookie of the Year candidate, left Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the top of the fifth inning with right hip tightness, according to the YES Network. He will undergo a precautionary MRI.
Torres, who has been dealing with a tight right hip flexor, was scratched from Tuesday's lineup, but he did appear as a defensive replacement later that game. On Wednesday, Torres apparently re-aggravated the injury after striking out twice in two at-bats. After leaving the field, he was replaced by Neil Walker, who was penciled in as the starting third baseman.
There's slight cause for concern at the moment, since Yankees' manager Aaron Boone told reporters prior to Wednesday's game that he had no concerns about Torres' hip moving forward.
“I was excited about how he came in [Tuesday],” Boone said. “I knew he was fine yesterday. I didn’t hesitate to put him in.”
In 63 games, Torres is hitting .294 with 15 home runs, 10 doubles, and 42 RBI.
