Yankees Spring Training Game 17: CC struggles in loss
CC Sabathia could not overcome early hole in tonight's loss.
Baltimore Orioles 11 – New York Yankees 2
The Yankees welcomed the Baltimore Orioles and the early hole was too much to overcome.
Against CC Sabathia, the Orioles came out aggressive when Joey Rickard led off with a double. On a ground ball to shortstop Didi Gregorius; the Yankees shortstop tried to get Rickard at third but he reached third to put two on base without an out. Manny Machado lined a double down the left field line to score a run. Mark Trumbo delivered the big blow of the inning with a deep blast to left center field for a three-run home run that gave the Orioles the early 4-0 lead before the Yankees even got to the plate.
In the second inning against Miguel Gonzalez, the Yankees cut into the deficit.
After a leadoff walk in the second inning to Mark Teixeira, Dustin Ackley hit a one-out double to put two runners in scoring position. Didi Gregorius came up with two outs and the runners still in scoring position but he cashed in with a two-run single to right field to put the Yankees on the board.
CC Sabathia pitched two more scoreless innings before the fourth inning undid all the progress the offense made.
Sabathia got the first out of the fourth inning before an infield single began to unravel the inning. Third baseman Rob Refsnyder committed a fielding error that put two runners into scoring position. After a ground out, Jonathan Schoop walked to load the bases. The last batter Sabathia faced, Manny Machado, who hit a two-run single to left center field to end Sabathia's spring start. Andrew Miller let in an inherited runner before ending the inning and CC's poor pitching line.
In 3 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed seven runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out one.
Dellin Betances came in for a scoreless fifth inning and Luis Cessa followed him. Cessa gave up a run in the sixth and two in the seventh inning for a rough two innings of work tonight. Nick Rumbelow surrendered one run in the ninth inning that was for the most part, a poor outing for the Yankees.
A lone positive lied in Aaron Hicks who showed off his strong throwing arm to get an outfield assist at second base in the seventh inning and a triple in the bottom of the inning.
