The New York Mets made their visit to the Yankees and a strong inning decided tonight's game.
In the second inning, Chase Headley got on base with a single and Starlin Castro put two runners into scoring position with a double. Didi Gregorius and Brett Gardner each brought home a run with a single to put the Yankees ahead by two. Alex Rodriguez came up with the bases loaded and scored two with a single to left field. Carlos Beltran brought one more run home on a sacrifice fly, to finish off a five-run second inning.
Luis Severino worked through four innings smoothly, allowing three hits but no runs. He exited the game after giving up a single to Johnny Monell and a double to Curtis Granderson. Aroldis Chapman came in for relief and gave the Mets their first run on a ground out. Yoenis Cespedes hit a double into right field that brought the Mets within three.
In 4 1/3 innings, Luis Severino allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five.
