Yankees vs Pirates (5/17/14)

David Phelps (0-0, 4.09 ERA) gets the start again against Edinson Volquez (1-3, 4.36 ERA) and the Pirates. Phelps has made two starts since being moved into the rotation, he took a no decisions in both against the Angels and Brewers. He was disappointed with his last outing, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings at Milwaukee. Volquez almost got his second win of the season Saturday against St. Louis. He retired nine of 10 before getting into trouble with two outs in the fifth. The next three batters reached, and he fell short of qualifying for the victory.
For Chris Stewart and Russell Martin the trip will be a return to the Bronx. Martin spent 2011 and 2012 in pinstripes and Stewart played the last two season on the team. "I had a good time there; obviously playing for the Yankees, you really can't beat it with the history and the tradition they have," Stewart said. "Playing in Yankee Stadium, obviously everything is first class. We were pretty spoiled there."
Carlos Beltran is now a true Yankee having made his first trip to disabled list with a bone spur in his right elbow. He is still hopeful that he will be able to avoid surgery. He started feeling discomfort in his elbow while swinging in the batting cage Monday, forcing himself out of the lineup after three at bats against the Mets. A cortisone injection has helped some, but not to the point where he is able to resume swinging. "I'm getting better, but not to the point where I can swing the bat 100 percent," Beltran said. The Yanks are hoping that rest and anti inflammatories will fix the situation, but Beltran said that if his situation does not improve in two weeks, surgery would be on the table. Surgery to shave the spur would keep him out for approximately six to eight weeks.
