Trent Grisham

Trent Grisham doesn't hit enough to make you forget he's out there. But watch him play center field for nine innings and you'll understand why the New York Yankees wanted him -- the glove is THAT good. Grisham is one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball, a Gold Glove winner who turns would-be extra-base hits into routine outs and makes center field look like it's about 30 feet smaller than it actually is.

Path to the Bronx

Grisham was a first-round pick (15th overall) by the Brewers in 2015 out of Richland High School in North Richland Hills, Texas. Milwaukee traded him to San Diego before the 2020 season in the deal that sent Zach Davies and Luis Urias to the Brewers -- a trade that worked out for both sides, honestly. With the Padres, Grisham became the everyday center fielder, won a Gold Glove in 2022, and helped San Diego reach the NLCS that October.

But the bat never caught up to the glove. Grisham hit .184 in 2023 -- not a typo, .184 -- and the Padres moved on. He signed a modest deal with the Yankees ahead of the 2024 season, brought in specifically as a defensive upgrade in center field and a platoon option against right-handed pitching.

(The front office basically said: "We'll take the elite defense and hope the bat plays just enough." That's the Grisham bet in a nutshell.)

Yankees Career

Grisham's time in pinstripes has been exactly what you'd expect -- highlight-reel catches, decent enough at-bats from the left side, and the occasional stretch where the bat goes completely silent. He played 98 games in 2024, hitting .222 with 7 home runs, and his role has continued into 2025 as a defensive-first center fielder who comes in late for Jasson Dominguez or starts against tough righties.

Nobody's writing poems about a .222 batting average. But the defense -- man, the defense. Grisham consistently ranks in the top tier of center fielders by Outs Above Average, and the eye test backs up every metric. He reads the ball off the bat like he's got a cheat code, takes perfect routes, and has the closing speed to track down balls that most outfielders wave at. (If you've ever watched a ball die in the gap and thought "that's a double" only to see Grisham appear out of nowhere -- yeah, that's the experience.)

Look, I know the game has shifted toward three-true-outcomes baseball where everybody wants launch angle and exit velocity. But defense in center field still matters -- especially in October, when one play can change a series. Grisham is the kind of defender who can save a game that a bat-first guy would cost you. That's not nothing.

The Yankees have enough bats. Judge, Bellinger, Jazz -- those guys handle the offense. What they needed was someone who could cover the gaps in center and not be a total zero at the plate. Grisham fits that description, and the fact that he's a lefty in a righty-heavy lineup is a nice bonus.

(Is it frustrating when he goes 0-for-4 with three strikeouts? Of course. But then he robs a home run in the seventh and you remember why he's out there.)

Grisham will never be the guy fans buy a jersey for. But he might be the guy who saves a game in October with a catch nobody else makes. And when that moment comes, you'll be real glad he's out there.
