Scouting Report
As a Draft-eligible Texas Tech sophomore in 2022, Hampton matched or set his career high for strikeouts in each of his final four starts and touched 99 mph in the NCAA regionals, prompting the Yankees to sign him for an over-slot $497,5000 as a sixth-rounder. He reached Double-A and became a Top 100 Prospect during his pro debut but pitched just 18 2/3 innings in 2024 while dealing with elbow discomfort and a groin strain. He had Tommy John surgery in February 2025 and won't return to the mound until after the start of this season. Before he got hurt, Hampton had a two plus pitches backed up by a pair of solid offerings. His best weapons were a 92-94 mph fastball that reached 97 with high spin rates and bat-missing carry and a tight low-80s slider. His upper-80s cutter and upper-70s curveball were nearly as effective, though he struggled to refine a too-firm upper-80s changeup with fade. Beside his pure stuff, Hampton's long arm action, low release height and flat approach angle make life tough on hitters. He created plenty of deception without losing control, and also showed feel for sequencing his pitches. He might have cracked New York's rotation two years ago had he stayed healthy, and the hope is that he can regain his 2023 form this season.
