August 31, 1996: Yankees steamroll Angels 14-3
After losing five in a row, the Yankees now have a modest two-game winning streak thanks in part to a high-powered offense and good pitching. They were able to defeat the Angels tonight by a score of 14-3.
Jimmy Key started for the Yankees and went eight strong inning, allowing three runs on five hits. He was backed by his bats, which exploded for seven runs - all against Angels starter Jason Dickson - in the third, four in the fourth and three in the seventh. Leading the way was Derek Jeter, who went 2-for-4 and drove in four RBI to bring his season total to 60. Right now, he's the frontrunner for the AL Rookie of the Year award.
The big third inning that gave the Yankees a 7-0 lead went as follows: Joe Girardi walk, Paul O'Neill double, Tino Martinez walk, Bernie Williams double, Darryl Strawberry intentional walk, Charlie Hayes double. After Mariano Duncan struck out, Derek Jeter singled home two runs before coming around to score himself on a Tim Raines single.
Key was able to relax from there, and Dale Polley recorded the final three outs to secure the win. The Yankees will look to take three out of four from the Angels when they close out their series tomorrow. Kenny Rogers starts against Chuck Finley.
