September 26, 1996: Yankees fall to Red Sox 5-3
A day after clinching the AL East, manager Joe Torre decided to rest some of his regulars, and the Yankees ended up losing to the Red Sox by a score of 5-3.
Jimmy Key started for New York and went six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He allowed four in the bottom of the first, putting the Yankees in a hole from the very beginning. Opposing him was Mike Maddux, who earned the win after pitching into the seventh inning and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits.
The Yankees scored one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Mariano Duncan drove in two, and capped the scoring with a solo homer in the seventh.
Dwight Gooden starts tomorrow against Aaron Sele as the Yankees continue to tune-up for the playoffs.
