September 3, 1996: Yankees fall to Oakland 10-9
Down 9-5 to the A's heading into the seventh inning this afternoon, the Yankees staged a comeback. After Paul O'Neill drove in Derek Jeter with a sac fly, Tino Martinez smacked three-run home run to tie the game at nine. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Brian Boehringer allowed a run in the bottom half, allowing Oakland to go up 10-9 and ultimately win the game by the same score.
Dwight Gooden started for New York against Don Wengert. Gooden went 4.2 innings and gave up six runs (5 earned) on eight hits. Although Jeter made two errors on the same play in the fourth that lead to a 4-2 Oakland lead, Gooden never looked comfortable and seemed doomed from the start.
Martinez and O'Neill were the offensive stars of the game for the Yankees, as each player hit a home run and drove in three runs. Jeter chipped in with two RBIs and Charlie Hayes added one with a single in the sixth inning.
The Orioles got blown by the Angels 10-2, so the Yankees' division lead remains at four. New York will go for the series win tomorrow when Andy Pettitte starts against Dave Telgheder.
