September 4, 1996: Andy Pettitte wins 20th, Yankees beat Oakland
This afternoon, Andy Pettitte became the first Yankee since 1985 to win 20 games in a season. He tossed seven inning and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out seven in a 10-3 win over the Oakland A's.
Pettitte came out of the gates strong, striking out six of the first seven batters he faced. He was backed by his offense, which erupted for four runs in the second, two in the third and four in the eighth. Seven different Yankees drove in a run, a welcome sight for manager Joe Torre who has seen his team struggle to score runs over the past month.
Pettitte allowed two runs in the third and one in the second, but that was all Oakland would get on the day. Pettitte threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes.
New York will now come home after their extended west coast road trip. They'll have a day off tomorrow before welcoming in the Blue Jays
