On this day in Yankees history - Dave Righetti's no-no
On Independence Day 1983, Dave Righetti threw a no hitter to beat the Red Sox 4-0 at Yankee Stadium. He became the first Bronx Bomber southpaw to throw a no-no since George Mogridge back in 1917. It was the first for the Yanks since Don Larsen tossed his perfect game in the 1956 World Series. The final out of the game didn't come from a no name hitter either, he got Wade Boggs to swing and miss.
"My biggest worry, because I had a tendency to fall toward third base, was Boggs tapping a ball between me and Mattingly and me trying to get to first base. I threw a lot of fastballs during the at bat, but the last slider I ended up throwing, he happened to miss it. Thank goodness."
"Rags" came to the Yanks in 1978 in a trade from Texas that sent Sparky Lyle to the Rangers, along with a few other players. In 1984, he was moved to the pen due to an excess of starters. There he would replace Goose Goosage as the teams closer. He was the first player in history to pitch a no hitter as well as lead the league in saves.
Rags was a two time All Star while in pinstripes, and named the AL Rookie of the Year in 1981. After New York, he spent time with the Giants, Athletics, Blue Jays and White Sox before retiring in 1995. He currently holds a front office role with the Giants after serving as their pitching coach from 2000-2017. Under his watch, the team won three World Series, threw four no hitters and a perfect game.
