Five Runs in Three Games: The Rays Sweep the Yankees in the 2026 ALDS

The Tampa Bay Rays swept the New York Yankees 3-0 in the 2026 ALDS. They won 1-0 on October 3 and 5-2 on October 5 at Tropicana Field, then finished it 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on October 7, a game in which Anthony Volpe's apparent tying homer was ruled fan interference.

A week earlier, the Yankees scored 18 runs in two games against Boston. Against Tampa Bay, they scored five in three.

That's the series. Everything else is detail, and most of the detail hurts.

No Judge, No Cushion

The 2026 Yankees came in hot off an 18-2 Wild Card sweep of the Red Sox. The Rays came in as AL East champs, rested after a first-round bye. The last time these two met in October, in the 2020 bubble ALDS, it didn't end well either.

Aaron Judge wasn't on the roster. The right calf strain he suffered on September 16 kept him off it, the same way it kept him out of the Boston series. Against the Red Sox, that didn't matter. Against Tampa Bay, it mattered a lot.

Game 1: One Hit

Drew Rasmussen took a no-hitter into the eighth inning at the Trop. Austin Wells finally broke it up with a two-out double, then the Rays threw him out trying to stretch it into a triple. (When it's going wrong, it's really going wrong.) Rasmussen finished with eight scoreless innings, one hit, two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Gerrit Cole was good, too. He allowed one run over five innings in his first postseason start since the 2024 World Series. The run was a Jonathan Aranda solo homer in the third, and it held up. Rays 1, Yankees 0.

Game 2: Four Errors

Two nights later, the Yankees made three errors in the first inning and four in the game. Cam Schlittler held the damage to one run in the first, but a George Lombard Jr. throwing error in the fifth loaded the bases, and Richie Palacios followed with a two-run single in a four-run inning. Schlittler took the loss.

Ben Rice hit solo homers off Freddy Peralta and Ian Seymour, and that was the whole offense. Rays 5, Yankees 2, and the series went back to the Bronx with the Yanks one loss from home.

Game 3: Too Short to Be a Homer

Max Fried got the ball with the season on the line, and the game went back and forth for a while. Aranda singled in a run in the third. Rice answered with an RBI single in the bottom half that scored Spencer Jones. Ryan Vilade homered in the fourth, and Jones doubled home Anthony Volpe to tie it 2-2.

Then, in the sixth, Victor Mesa Jr. hit a two-run homer off a Fried sweeper into the right-field seats. 4-2 Rays. It was Fried's last pitch. He finished with 5 2/3 innings, seven hits, four runs and seven strikeouts, and took the loss.

The bottom of the sixth is the part everybody's going to remember. With George Lombard Jr. on first, Volpe drove a ball off Griffin Jax to the left-field wall, and it went into the seats. Tie game, or so we thought. Replay showed a fan reaching over the wall and getting a hand on it. The review ruled the ball wouldn't have left the park and wouldn't have been caught by Mesa, so Lombard scored, Volpe got an RBI double, and it was 4-3.

I've watched that replay more times than I'd like to admit. The fan touched it. The call was right. Aaron Boone said as much afterward, which tells you how clear it was. (Yankees fans of a certain age will note that Jeffrey Maier never had to deal with replay review. The universe has a long memory.)

The Yankees didn't score again. Bryan Baker struck out Trent Grisham on a changeup with the tying run at second to end it. It was Baker's third save of the series, one in every game. Ian Seymour, who threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, got the win.

How Bad It Got

The Yankees hit .130 in the series. Tampa Bay outscored them 10-5. Grisham went 0-for-11.

It was the first time the Yankees had been swept in a best-of-five series since the 1980 ALCS against Kansas City. And with the last title coming in 2009, the drought is now 17 years. That's a long time for a franchise that used to treat October like a home game. (Last year it was Toronto in the ALDS. This year it was Tampa Bay. The opponent keeps changing. The round doesn't.)

I don't think Boone lost this series, and I don't think one fan in the left-field seats lost it either. Five runs in three games loses a series. A lineup that spent all summer waiting on Judge waited on him through October, too, and he never made it back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who won the 2026 ALDS between the Yankees and Rays?

The Tampa Bay Rays swept the Yankees 3-0. They won Game 1 1-0 on October 3 and Game 2 5-2 on October 5 at Tropicana Field, then won Game 3 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on October 7, 2026. The Rays outscored the Yankees 10-5, and the Yankees hit .130 in the series.

Why was Anthony Volpe's home run overturned in Game 3 of the 2026 ALDS?

A fan reached over the left-field wall and touched the ball. On replay review, umpires ruled spectator interference, determining the ball wouldn't have left the park and wouldn't have been caught. Volpe got an RBI double, George Lombard Jr. scored from first, and the Yankees trailed 4-3 instead of tying the game.

Did Aaron Judge play in the 2026 ALDS?

No. Judge strained his right calf on September 16, 2026, and the Yankees left him off both the Wild Card Series and ALDS rosters.

When was the last time the Yankees were swept in a best-of-five series before 2026?

The 1980 ALCS, when the Kansas City Royals beat them three straight. The 2026 ALDS loss to Tampa Bay was the first time since then that the Yankees got swept in a best-of-five, and it extended their World Series title drought to 17 years.
