George Lombard Jr. was a shortstop who played for the New York Yankees in 2026. Career stats: .237 batting average, 7 home runs, 22 RBI.
George Lombard Jr. is a New York Yankees shortstop and the son of former big league outfielder George Lombard. The Yankees drafted him 26th overall out of Miami's Gulliver Prep in 2023. He homered in his MLB debut on Aug. 4, 2026, and played shortstop in the club's 2026 playoff run.
The kid's first big league hit left the yard. His first two months after that were a lot messier, and honestly more interesting.
Path to the Bronx
Baseball's the family business. His dad was a Braves second-round pick in 1994, played six big league seasons with Atlanta, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Washington, coached first base for the Dodgers, and has been Detroit's bench coach since late 2020. Junior's younger brother Jacob, another Gulliver Prep shortstop, went 14th overall to the Marlins in the 2026 draft. (Thanksgiving at the Lombards' must be one long scouting report.)
The Yankees took George Jr. at No. 26 in 2023 and paid him $3.3 million, a bit over the $3,065,000 slot, to skip his Vanderbilt commitment. He hit .329 in his first 24 games at High-A Hudson Valley in 2025, got bumped to Double-A Somerset in May, and played in the Futures Game that July in Atlanta (where Dad's big league career started -- different ballpark, same town). The bat cooled at Double-A -- .235 across 132 games on the year -- but he walked 87 times and stole 35 bases at 20 years old. MLB Pipeline ranked him the No. 32 prospect in baseball entering 2026, tops in the system.
He hit .284/.411/.498 in 78 minor league games in 2026, even with a sprained-finger stint that cost him nearly a month at Scranton. Then the trade deadline passed, and Brian Cashman made the call nobody had to squint at.
Yankees Career
The Yanks selected his contract on Aug. 4 and optioned Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez to make room. That night, against St. Louis, Lombard turned an 0-2 sweeper from Hunter Dobbins into a 392-foot solo homer in the fifth. He's the first Yankees shortstop ever to homer in his debut. He also started two inning-ending double plays, and the Yanks won 2-0.
He's checked a lot of boxes.
Then the glove, supposedly the safe part of his game, went sideways. On Aug. 27 against Houston, Lombard made an error in his sixth straight game, and no Yankee had done that since Chick Fewster in 1921. He didn't dodge it: "It's not acceptable, can't happen at this level." Boone said he'd get through it.
He did, mostly. On Sept. 9 he hit the club's first grand slam of 2026, against Colorado, and per the AP he became the youngest Yankee to hit one since Mickey Mantle in 1952. On Sept. 24 he contorted around Rays catcher Liam Hicks to score on a wild pitch, then hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth to finish off a comeback from four down. He ended the regular season at .237 with 7 homers and 22 RBI in 42 games. That's not a great line. It's a perfectly fine one for a 21-year-old who learned the job in a pennant race.

October
His postseason debut, Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against Boston, went about as well as these things go. His bloop single off Payton Tolle in the second got the first rally going, and he added two more hits (and scored on an Austin Wells sac fly) in a 9-0 rout. At 21 years and 119 days, he's the youngest Yankee ever to get a hit in his first postseason game. He said he was "locked in and having fun" once the nerves from intros wore off. A night later, his RBI single off Garrett Crochet helped blow open the six-run sixth that finished the sweep.
Tampa Bay was a different story. In Game 2 of the ALDS the Yankees made four errors, and the fourth was Lombard's wide throw that let Jonny DeLuca reach with two outs in the fifth. Richie Palacios followed with a two-run single, and that was the ballgame.
In Game 3, he was on first in the sixth when Volpe -- back from Scranton and playing second -- drove one toward the seats, and a fan interfered with it. On review, the would-be game-tying homer became an RBI double. Lombard scored. The Rays won 4-3 and swept.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is George Lombard Jr.'s father?
His father is George Lombard, a former outfielder who played six big league seasons with the Braves, Tigers, Devil Rays and Nationals. He later coached first base for the Dodgers and has been the Detroit Tigers' bench coach since late 2020.
When did George Lombard Jr. make his MLB debut?
Lombard debuted on Aug. 4, 2026, at Yankee Stadium against the Cardinals. He homered off Hunter Dobbins for his first career hit, becoming the first Yankees shortstop to homer in his major league debut.
Where was George Lombard Jr. drafted?
The Yankees selected him in the first round, 26th overall, in the 2023 draft out of Gulliver Prep in Miami. He signed for $3.3 million, above the pick's slot value, instead of attending Vanderbilt.
How did George Lombard Jr. do in the 2026 playoffs?
He had three hits in his postseason debut against Boston, the youngest Yankee ever to get a hit in his first playoff game, and added an RBI single in the clinching Game 2. Against Tampa Bay in the ALDS, he made a costly throwing error in Game 2 and scored on Anthony Volpe's fan-interference RBI double in the season-ending Game 3 loss.
The first hit cleared the fence, and the last run he scored in 2026 came on a ball a fan wouldn't let leave the park. Somewhere in between, he figured out how to play shortstop in the Bronx. That's not a bad rookie year. It just ended too early.
